Happiness
We recently considered Z's idea that research and writing are fun and satisfying activities. Here is a post from Thomas showing once again how "great minds think alike."
Such components of an academic's career as teaching and even service can also be very satisfying. I used to whine about how much I hated service but now I have discovered that my problem had more to do with my own uninformed and unthinking choice of service obligations.
I now know that it is more than possible to figure out a mix of research, teaching and service activities every aspect of which will make you happy.
It is true, also about service. Everyone has some service task they could do that is fun and rewarding for that particular personality I am not very adept at many service tasks but I am very good at mentoring and the preparation of tenure documents, at mock interviews. At organizing professional development workshops. These are all valuable tasks that are rewarding and satisfying.
I love the right kind of service because it is good for mental health. Outside Romance Languages there exist faculty whose emotional age is: ADULT and who would actually work than fight, so doing service at the university level for me is like going to a rest spa.

Is it just me or is the link to Thomas's article not working?
