Death of the Author

 T.S. Eliot prefigures Barthes's death of the author in "The Three Voices of Poetry," in 1953. He says the author needs to 'rest in peace" once the text is in the reader's hand.

How are he, and the new criticism, and Barthes different on this, do you think?

[I remember thinking Barthes' idea was old hat and surmising there MUST be more to it if people were so excited.]
