Four Ideas about Lorca (IV): No Secret Codes

The last idea is that Lorca is using concrete reality (images) whose primary meaning is in the particularity of the thing itself, not in a cryptography. He thinks in images. Let's read him, first of all, for what he seems to be saying. So Yerma is a play about an infertile woman, not a play about Lorca's psyche.

To say it's about the poet's psyche is clumsy but at least doesn't invalidate plausible ordinary responses -- and doesn't require us to believe Lorca literally concealed what he cared about. To say the play is really about the golden ratio or the gold standard is another level of absurdity.
