Deep Reading
I prefer deep reading to close reading. Close reading can often involve a kind of finickiness about surface details, or sometimes the mechanical kind of textual analysis taught in schools. There really is not distance reading, but there is a superficial approach, one that doesn't take into account the tradition underlying the poem.
