It's because language has a built in redundancy: you can leave out certain information and still have a message communicated. For example, you can leave out all the vowels and replace them with xes.

Don't know if you hang out in those sorts of online circles, but "disemvoweling" is used in moderating online forums. The fact that the message is generally recoverable is part of the rationale.
