Poem written early in the morning

Our dreams are poorly furnished--a concrete floor at best

They are our own, we might be more opulent, at no extra expense!

Even in our deepest imagination, though, what we desire is ugly and brutal

I dreamed we were prosperous men in ruffs, in a wood-paneled room, voting to abolish tenure for ourselves. In the next scene we had become 25 year old graduate student men, rushing up the steps of the administration building to storm it. We were all now super-intellectuals, but with a lot of other skillz. I have not figured out the politics of this dream.

This morning the dream had a sequel, in which we had turned into some yet other metamorphosis, taking yet more risks for the sake of remaking and renewing the university, and the rights of intellectuals, students and faculty. I was going to write it down as soon as I woke up, but now I have forgotten. I do remember thinking it was a high anxiety dream.
