This claim, from Butler herself in her 1999 preface, seems unbelievable. Nobody in France who reads Kristeva also reads Foucault, Lacan, or Wittig?

The sentence may not scan. She implies their readers were writers who did not read one another.
Anyway, Butler's a lightweight, you know that, and so is her friend Avital. GF Wendy Brown is smarter.
Yes, I think I understood her to be saying that readers of Kristeva didn't read Lacan, etc..., even though the sentence actually says something different--what you say.
How did a deconstructive approach lead to a situation of very essentialistic thought like we have now? Nobody would have pronouns in their email signatures if it were not for Butler.
We are reading Sedgwick and Butler today. Sedgwick seems dated too, but stands up better than Butler.
