Every time I read this novel, the same characters die.

I like this aphorism. But it would be possible to write a novel where this didn't happen. Pronouns rather than names appearing in ambiguously described situations. "He entered the room. There were three other people there. One of them had a gun. He shot him." It would be difficult to make it satisfying to the reader, who would, perhaps, mainly feel like they were doing all the work themselves. But different people could die on each reading.
