I think everyone serious is an autodidact. You cannot learn enough simply from the materials presented in classes. You have to read 100 times more than that. I didn't learn a lot from most professors I've had. It's not necessarily a knock on them, though. I still don't think I have read enough.

My best classes in college were mainly the best because of the materials and having instructors that didn't get in the way of one's seeing them.
I also had classes from some very famous, brilliant lecturers and liked them, but what I learned wasn't the material as much as the way of showing you how they were working out ideas.
